Do I take my smart meter when I move?
So, your bags are packed, and you shut the front door of your old business premises or home for the last time, and suddenly you find yourself wondering: do I take my smart meter when I move?
With over 21.5 million smart meters in UK homes and small businesses, it’s a question that is beginning to pop up frequently. Fortunately, we’re here to help.
So, do you take your smart meter with when you move?
The simple answer is no. When you move from one property to another, you will leave your smart meter behind. However, there are lots of ways to make the process of moving easier when it comes to managing your energy needs.
Contact your energy supplier
At least 48 hours before you move, contact your supplier to let them know you’re moving, and give them your new address. They will need to know when you’re moving to log your final meter readings.
Note your final reading
Take note of your final meter readings on the day you move out. Take a picture of the reading if possible. If there are any questions about your final bill, having this figure on-hand will help provide clarity.
Leave your In-Home-Device behind
If you have an In-Home-Device (IHD) in your premises – remember that it is linked to your smart meter and won’t work if you take it elsewhere. If your new premises has a smart meter, there should be an IHD waiting for you when you arrive. If your new business location has a smart meter but you cannot find the IHD, you can arrange with your energy supplier to deliver a new one for a nominal fee.
Don’t cancel your debit transaction yet
If you pay by a debit transaction, don’t cancel it until your supplier has made contact with you. They may need you to make a final payment, or refund any credit owing to your account.
Let your new property’s supplier know you’ve moved in
Get in touch with the supplier at your new property to let them know you’ve moved in.
