Smart meter investigation underway

The National Audit Office (NAO) has announced that it has commenced an investigation into Great Britain’s 2020 smart meter roll-out. This smart meter investigation follows two previous appraisals on smart meters in 2011 and 2014 by the organisation. Its report will be published later in the year.

In its latest figures published in November 2017, BEIS confirmed 8.3 million of the proposed 53 million smart meters had been installed in households and small businesses. NAO’s investigation is set to examine whether Government will meet its targets and monitor the realisation of £16.7 billion worth of long-term meter-based benefits. This is especially in light of the fact that suppliers have only recently started to install second generation SMETS2 meters and SMETS1 conversions are said to commence this year. A recent bill has been introduced to extend the smart meter roll-out to 2025.
